A Daily Dose of Choices

I know with a conviction beyond all doubt that the biggest problem that all of us might encounter – in fact, almost the only problem we can encounter- is choosing the right thing to do. Every day we make countless choices. Did you ever stop thinking how many you make from the time you wake to the time you go to bed? Even the time you wake up is your choice. What you do after that is to decide on an endless list of choices: what to eat for breakfast, what clothes to wear, who to be with, etc. We are given options by God. It is a blessing that all of us deserve to have. Our choices keep the world on everything in it on track.

For many years, we go through almost the same “routine” and somehow, we’ve done so many, many times that we no longer put so much effort in picking choices for each day. In other words, it’s very much like being driven by an autopilot. We don’t think much of the possible outcomes, costs, and other related matters. We often neglect the art of living. We became so passive that we have allowed the flow to carry us in the most unlikely places.

Crossing the street is easy; people do it every day. As a person grows old, the number of times he crossed the street also increases. It has become so normal that when he crosses the street, he does it passively. A careless manner due to the “I am already used to this” mindset. But still, there are accidents in the street. Why? Why do they happen even if we are already used to it? It happens because every day is a new day.

There is no single “program” that worked in the past and will continually work perfectly in the future. Get involved in your own decision making today. There is no assurance that the choices you made for the circumstances of yesterday will give the same effect to the circumstances of tomorrow. The dose of choices you had yesterday applies only to that day. And tomorrow? You will definitely need choices especially made for that one.
